Extraction of polyphenols from orange peels using innovative technologies

Pr Nicolas Louka from the Unviersity Saint Joseph of Beirut will give a strategic presentation about the innovative technologies to extract polyphenols from orange peels.

Industrial extraction of citrus juice leads to huge amounts of by-products, which are an important source of natural antioxidants such as polyphenols. Polyphenols extracted from citrus peels are used in food industries to prevent rancidity and oxidation of lipids. They also have been beneficial for human health due to their anticancer, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory activities.

Different techniques have been used to extract the polyphenols and were compared. Innovative extraction methods exhibited a tremendous advantage over the conventional ones especially in profitability and transfer capacity to industrial scales. These innovative methods will be presented during Beirut Antioxidants Congress.
